Brown the bacon or chorizo, if using.
Add hogao and cook for 3 minutes.
Stir in rinsed lentils, carrots, potatoes, cumin, and broth.
Simmer partly covered for 35–45 minutes until the lentils and potatoes are tender.
Add water as necessary.
Mash a small amount against the side of the pot if a thicker broth is desired.
Season near the end and finish with cilantro.
